We understand that not all children react the same way when visiting the dentist. Our goal is to help decrease that anxiety and to help your child feel more comfortable when visiting our dental clinic. Each type of sedation we offer works differently on each child. We provide multiple sedation options and we can discuss and recommend the most suitable type of sedation based on the child’s needs. Our primary goal is to treat your child in a safe environment while maximizing their comfort. Not all children require sedation, but it can be a valuable option for the right candidates. We have the training, capacity, and equipment to provide all types of sedation, including; laughing gas, oral sedation, and sleep dentistry. We will discuss the right option for your child during their consultation dental visit.
In a short answer... yes
The risk of anything catastrophic happening is exceptionally low, even lower than the chance of getting struck by lightning. Healthy children who receive sedation dentistry in a dental office seem to be at no higher risk than those that receive treatment in a hospital. For the small percentage of children who may be at high risk for possible complications, we will discuss alternative options. Patient safety is our utmost priority.
Laughing gas is the most common type of sedation used in dentistry. Your child will start by wearing a mask through which the gas is administered. Your child will remain awake throughout the visits and when the gas is shutoff, it will only take a few minutes for your child to recover. The best part? Your child can resume normal activities right after their visit is over.
Compared to laughing gas, medication is a slightly stronger form of sedation. Your child may benefit from oral sedation if we feel that laughing gas may not be enough to calm their nerves. Your child would need to drink the sedative 10-15-minutes prior to their visit. At times, laughing gas is used in conjunction to an oral sedative. Your child will remain awake and relaxed throughout the procedure but will require a short while to recover, so, it is best to not schedule any activities immediately following a dental procedure that required an oral sedative.
